About Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Santoro Education Lifeskills Foundation

What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important part of our human development and education. This consists of skills and behaviors that help everyone know and understand themselves and others, manage their emotions, and achieve healthy life goals. This also includes learning how to establish and maintain supportive relationships, as well as making responsible decisions.
Parents, of course, want their children to be healthy, do well in school, get a good education, and ultimately, get good jobs and become productive members of society. Not coincidentally, employers also want to hire people who have 12 key traits which are learned as a part of SEL.
If parents want their kids to get good jobs, and employers look for the traits that are learned as part of SEL, why is it not being taught to children from infancy through pre-K education, and as part of the core curriculum in our schools?
If academics is your race car, then SEL is the steering wheel. You can’t drive a car without a steering wheel, right?
